I’ve been going to classes at Title Boxing Club in Lawrence for about two months. If I had been following a typical running routine for this amount of time, I would be restless and ready for a race by now. If I had been doing yoga or Pilates, I would be making up excuses and working out with less consistency. If I had been doing strength exercises on my own, I would have quit about one month ago…
But, with the boxing and kickboxing classes, I’m still motivated, energized and excited to workout.
I think this enthusiasm stems from that fact that I’ve experience real results. Sure, I’m able to run farther each week when I’m training for a race. But, with boxing, the benefits are more vast and varied…
The race wasn’t my quickest ever, but when compared to Rock the Crossroads 5K — another hot-and-humid race — it was clearly a success. Ironically, I ran five times a week back then, whereas I’m only running twice a week (plus a few laps around the gym during each class) now!
More Core Strength
Although the classes are categorized as “boxing” or “kickboxing,” they are really complete, total-body workouts. Typical workouts include rounds with the medicine balls, all types of crunches and of course tons of punches — all of which requires keeping your core tight.
I love the way my abs look, but I’ve also noticed improvement in my posture and the way my back feels after standing for long periods of time.
Measurable Arm Strength
Here’s the thing: I have always been a fan of doing abdominal work. (Is that weird?) I’m able to integrate crunches, planks, bicycles, etc. pretty easily into my home workouts and follow through consistently. When it comes to arm strength, though? I’ve always considered myself a lost cause.
Until I started taking boxing classes…
Now, with each jab, cross punch or hook against the 100-pound bags, I’m working muscles I never knew I had.
We also do way more push-ups each class than I ever would on my own. Although I haven’t exactly learned to like the up-downs, they are good measurements of my improved strength: When I first began taking classes, I did every modification and still only made it through a few reps at a time. Now, I’m getting through each round with “man-style” push-ups.
The best part is that I keep getting stronger, faster and better with every single workout. That means there’s still a lot to look forward to.
Now for some exciting news…
I began taking classes at Lawrence’s Title Boxing Club through the recommendation of a friend. After just one class, I was hooked — and I was happy to write about it on my blog without any compensation.
After taking classes for a while, I got to know the staff and I let them now about my blog… A few meetings later, I am now going to be heading up all the club’s social media!
