I don’t think I ever really outgrew arts and crafts. But, rather than make another trip to Hobby Lobby (because God knows I did enough of that while planning for the wedding!), I’ve been getting more into upcycling lately.
The gist of it is that you take old items around the house — such as t-shirts, bottles or scraps of yarn — and turn them into new, useful things. It’s basically a perfect way to celebrate Earth Day!
Pinterest is filled with all sorts of upcycling projects. Just search for “upcycle” and I guarantee there are a few projects that you can do today with items already filling up your junk drawers.
Or, better yet, here are a few of my favorite upcycling ideas… (Click on the pictures for the sites and instructions.)
Cut glass bottles
I love all of these ideas… And I have the wine bottles to do it ‘em with! (Still mostly full. At least until after my race this Saturday.)
Mason jar soap dispenser
I did this last year with one of my many mason jars. I think it’s so fun! Plus, Mason jars are probably the only kinds of containers that I have more of than wine bottles.
DIY infinity scarf
This is one of my own DIY tutorials! I loved wearing this scarf last winter.
Sweater potholders
This is the next craft on my to-do list. I’ve realized this winter how many sweaters I have that I simply don’t wear. These potholders would be great for my own kitchen or as gifts!
Grow your own
If you think about it, other than growing a baby, this is just about the best “craft” out there. Just plant some dinky little seeds, add water and sunlight and — before too long — you’ll have a wonderful garden! (At least in theory.)
There’s still time this year!
What are you doing for Earth Day?
This year, I am celebrating Earth by spending 13.1 miles running! My Oz half-marathon is this Saturday and I am ready to go… And get it over with.
Wish my friends Katelyn, Mandy and me luck!
